亮躬耕陇亩，好为《梁父吟》。身长八尺，每自比于管仲、乐毅，时人莫之许也。惟博陵崔州平、颍川徐庶元直与亮友善，谓为信然。

Zhu Geliang was farming in the countryside and often chanted the Song of Liang Fu. Zhu Geliang was eight feet tall and often compared himself to Guan Zhong and Yue Yi（both these two men were excellent political strategists for the king in ancient times）, but no one acknowledged his self-compliment at that time. Only Cui Zhouping in Boling County and Xu Shu in Yingchuan County, both of whom were in sound friendship with Zhu Ge Liang, recognized his talent.

时先主屯新野。徐庶见先主，先主器之，谓先主曰：“诸葛孔明者，卧龙也，将军岂愿见之乎？”先主曰：“君与俱来。”庶曰：“此人可就见，不可屈致也。将军宜枉驾顾之。”

At that time, Lord Liu Bei stationed his armies in Xin Ye Town. Xu Shu came to visit Liu Bei and received great welcome from Liu. Xu said to Liu, “ZhuGe Liang（nicknamed Kongming） is a peerless talent like a slumbering dragon （which would become very formidable once waking up）. Would you like to visit him？” Liu said, “You can bring him here.” Xu said, “ He would not come to others humbly, so you, my lord had better go to visit him.”

由是先主遂诣亮，凡三往，乃见。因屏人曰：“汉室倾颓，奸臣窃命，主上蒙尘。孤不度德量力，欲信大义于天下;而智术浅短，遂用猖蹶，至于今日。然志犹未已，君谓计将安出？”

Liu Bei took Xu’s advice and went to visit ZhuGe Liang. He went to ZhuGe’s house for a total of three times before he finally met him. After Liu saw ZhuGe Liang in ZhuGe’s house, Liu ordered his servants away and said to Zhu, “With the reign of the Han Dynasty almost collapsing, the whole court fell in the hands of wicked officials and the king is on the way of escaping persecution. I know I am a very humble man without convincing virtues and ample power, but I am eager to resume justice and the order of the imperial court. However, I am short of resourcefulness and failed all the time. Nonetheless, never have I surrendered to my failures. Could you please enlighten me on how to turn the tables？”

亮答曰：“自董卓已来，豪杰并起，跨州连郡者不可胜数。曹操比于袁绍，则名微而众寡。然操遂能克绍，以弱为强者，非惟天时，抑亦人谋也。今操已拥百万之众，挟天子而令诸侯，此诚不可与争锋。孙权据有江东，已历三世，国险而民富，贤能为之用，此可以为援而不可图也。荆州北据汉、沔，利尽南海，东连吴会，西通巴蜀，此用武之国，而其主不能守，此殆天所以资将军，将军岂有意乎？益州险塞，沃野千里，天府之土，高祖因之以成帝业。刘璋暗弱，张鲁在北，民殷国富而不知存恤，智能之士思得明君。将军既帝室之胄，信义著于四海，总揽英雄，思贤如渴，若跨有荆、益，保其岩阻，西和诸戎，南抚夷越，外结好孙权，内修政理;天下有变，则命一上将将荆州之军以向宛、洛，将军身率益州之众出于秦川，百姓孰敢不箪食壶浆，以迎将军者乎？诚如是，则霸业可成，汉室可兴矣。”

ZhuGe Liang replied, “Since the dictatorship of Dong Zhuo, numerous powers have arisen in various regions and areas across the country. Compared with Dong Zhuo, Cao Cao is far lower-statured and has far fewer militaries. The reason why Cao Cao could defeat Dong Zhou lies not only in the favorable time, but also in his competent think tank. Now Cao Cao has an aggregate of some one million soldiers and is holding the king as a captive to control all powers in the country. Therefore, it is unwise to fight with him directly for the time being. Sun Quan’s family has dominated Jiangdong Region for three generations. Jiangdong is a place with sophisticated terrains and people there are living well-off. Moreover, Sun Quan is a wise lord who knows to employ eligible people. Therefore, we can only turn to him for help instead of invading his territories. Jingzhou County is adjacent to Han and Mian River in the north, coastal areas in the south, Wu County and Kuaiji County in the east, and Ba and Shu County in the west. So as you can see, Jingzhou is actually a militarily strategic territory, but its owner, Liu Biao is not able to keep it. Therefore, it is literally a grand opportunity for you! Don’t you want to overtake this county？ Yizhou is a steep-landscaped place with vast and fertile lands in Ba and Shu County. The first king of Han Dynasty relied on this place to establish his imperial cause. Yizhou is really a highly populated region with abundant natural resources, yet its owner Liu Zhang has not cherished it. Most elites there are looking forward to serving an enlightened lord. My lord, you are the descendant of the royal family and enjoy a renowned reputation around the country for hospitably welcoming great heroes and gifted masterminds. So if you can occupy Jingzhou and Yizhou County, safeguard the vital passes, forge a sound relationship with the minorities in the west, appease the minorities in the south, form an external union with Sun Quan and conduct internal political reform, once the situation changes, you can dispatch a senior general to lead the armies in Jingzhou to the Central Plain while you yourself can lead the Yizhou armies out of Qinchuan! I believe all the people in Qinchuan would happily embrace you with food and wine! If you can follow my advice above, you are doomed to succeed and the Han Dynasty can be revived.”

先主曰：“善!”于是与亮情好日密。

关羽、张飞等不悦，先主解之曰：“孤之有孔明，犹鱼之有水也。愿诸君勿复言。”羽、飞乃止。

Liu Bei said, “Grand!” Since then, Liu Bei had become more and more intimate with Zhu Geliang.

Seeing this, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei （Liu Bei’s sworn brothers） felt unhappy about it. Liu Bei explained to them, “ZhuGe Liang is to me what water is to fish. So I hope you do not feel unhappy with ZhuGe any more.” Guan Yu and Zhang Fei had to give up.

关羽、张飞等人不高兴了，刘备劝解他们说：“我有了孔明，就像鱼得到水一样。希望各位不要再说什么了。”关羽、张飞才平静下来。
